     Affandi was born in 1907 in Cirebon, the part of West Java. No one knows the exact of his birthdate. His father is R. Koesoema, a measuring technician at sugar factory in Ciledug. Affandi got his last education at AMS-B in Jakarta. Affandi married with Maryati when he was 26 years old, actually in 1933. Maryati is a woman born in Bogor. They have a daughter who also later become a famous painter like her father. The name of their daughter is Kartika.

     Before he began painting, Affandi had ever once become a teacher and also ever become a ticket man at local movie theatre in Bandung. This job was not long enough to made Affandi stayed inbecause he was more interested in painting. At the 30th of his age, Affandi joined Lima Bandung community, which was the community for five Bandung painters. There were Hendra Gunawan, Barli, Sudarso, and Wahdi and also Affandi as a leader. This community had a great contribution in developing arts and painting in Indonesia. This community was different with Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia (Persagi) in 1938. This community was a learning together forum and a sharing forum among the painters.

     In 1943, Affandi held his single exhibition at Poetera Building, Jakarta which also being colonized by a Japanese army. Empat Serangkai -- consist of Ir. Soekarno, Drs. Mohammad Hatta, Ki Hajar Dewantara, and Kyai Haji Mas Mansyur-- lead Poetera Culture Section (Seksi Kebudayaan Poetera--Poesat Tenaga Rakyat) to take the contributions. In this Poetera Culture Section, Affandi act as a manager and S. Seodjojono act as responsibilitor, who held a direct contact with Bung Karno (the nickname for Presiden Soekarno).

     Before and after Independence day of Indonesia on August 17th, 1945 by Bung Karno and Bung Hatta (the nickname for Mohammad Hatta), Affandi actively made a struggle poster which can burn up the Indonesian army to defeat the Netherland's colonialism. This activity was done together with another painters and artists who merged in Poetera Culture Section, they were: S. Seodjojono, Dullah, Trubus, and Chairil Anwar. Next, Affandi decide to moved to Yogyakarta and built Society Artist 1945 community. This community became Youth Indonesian Artist community after S. Soedjojono had also moved to Yogyakarta. In 1947, Affandi built Society Painter with Hendra Gunawan and Kusnadi. This community was made to give a chance for the younger people to become a painter and artist. Then in 1948, Affandi returned to Jakarta and established The Indonesian Painter community.

     No longer after that, in 1949, Affandi got grant from India's government and lived there for 2 years. Affandi was doing his activities there and held many exhibitons at big cities until 1951. Furthermore, Affandi held exhibitions tour in Europe, like London, Amsterdam, Brussel, Paris, and Rome. Affandi was also pointed by Indonesian government to represent Indonesia in international exhibition (Biennale Exhibition) three times in sequence. The Beinnale Exhibition was held in Brasil (1952), Venice (Italia - 1954), and Sao Paulo (1956). In Venice, Italia, Affandi succeed in winning.
