PROFILE
Maryati was born in Bogor in 1916, married to Affandi in 1933 and in 1934 gave birth to a daughter – Kartika Affandi. In 1945 she moved to Yogyakarta after residing in Bandung and Bali. Maryati was also beside her husband during the uplifting struggle against the Dutch and Japanese. She always joined her husband when he travelled to India, Europe, and USA. Then she desired to work for her own and began to study painting. In 1957, for the first time she participated in the exhibition with other Indonesian women painters. From then on Maryati often joined other exhibitions in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali. Since 1984, Maryati has focused on embroidery. She passed away on May 26th, 1991, one year after her husband’s death.
